Hand Made, Hand Stitched

I have used this affirmation as the cover photo for my facebook page. Affirmations are a continuing theme, hand stitching is a new addition and I love the meditative repetition. It becomes addictive.

I am preparing a workshop for the Shared Space event on monday 6th August. Join us in hand stitching, reusing cloth and using letters to create short affirmations.

It would be lovely to see you there.

Artist…When? Artist…. Now!

I claim to be an artist.

I think of myself as an artist, I’ve been practising my artist intro.

I have a BA Hons degree.

I can draw and paint….oil paint on paper

I can make textiles..weave,spin fibres,print,knit,crochet,dye…

I can sew cloth-pretty much anything..handbags, hats,dresses,trousers,curtains, cushions,quilts, banners….

So the indication is there.

Yet do my actions match my words?

Do I live/breathe/make/create art ….YES….. on a regular self sustaining £$£ basis?..No

No. I try sporadically, have flurries of £$£ activity and all the while at the day job I think about what I will do When….what will happen When...I plan, I prepare, take classes, visualise my future artist life When…..

So now as I go through the who, why, what checklist.. the When has to be NOW!

Because as my grand-daughter and I sing

‘Enjoy yourself, while you’re still in the pink..( our favourite colour) Enjoy yourself, it’s later than you think…..’

WHEN? NOW!  and is Why  I am taking art marketing  lessons.

Smart phone and me

this is being written on my daughters smart phone YAY TO TE CHNOLOGYY……

Some time later…..Technology is amazing even if I made spelling mistakes !

As a reformed technophobe I now draw great inspiration from all the wonderful

facilities available to make life easier and keep us all connected. Ultimately though it boils down to HOW you use these things and the true, real benefits

gained. How do you evaluate the benefits of your technology?

Finishing

Sampler#1 is finished now and it’s another kind of collage…one made from sample blocks exploring the quilted stitch and pattern.

Dark and Light

from this……

to this……………a series of collages, exploring light and dark from the scrap basket.

Why handmade?

Well, there is a campaign to promote handmade. Of course I support this for the same reasons that I make my art in the first place. To create  something with unique quality, to support myself in the local economy whilst keeping  an eye on those carbon miles.  At the same time reusing, reducing and recreating with materials that would otherwise end up in landfill. I think this link is to add the logo and icon to my blog sidebar….Please bear with me until i learn how to do this. In the meantime  the computer is home now, and images will shortly resume with my blog posts. hurray!

Where’s the Art?

Where’s the Art you wonder? Where have the hands gone and what have they being doing?

Well the hands have been busy…journal writing, stitching Nigel’s quilt, making a ‘Sewin’ banner, drawing sketches for bag silhouettes to be worked up in exciting cloth combinations..

it’s now really hitting me the potential impact that we may loose the info on the hard drive….(which incidentally is under the knife as we speak..well, as I blog!) and the missing of the computer generally, with ease of access. The main thing I miss are my photos…which explains the lack of images on these pages presently. I’m sure there may well be other ways and means to include images.I’ve just not looked into it yet.Keep you posted .

The i mac went …

The i mac went to computer outpatient and had it’s diagnosis, supported by a donor laptop, checking to see if it’s nerve centres are still there and working. They are..phew!

The external hard drive that was purchased to back up all the files, didn’t…because the operating system was incompatible. So now we have to pay to retrieve the files that I thought had been saved  AND apparently our i mac is considered VINTAGE! Still this fits with the retro feel of my work at least!

i mac is away now, being tended to, and it could be touch and go to save our files.

I am back in the computer shop. Years ago this place was always booked to full capacity, these days it is less than one quarter full. I am glad it’s still here, though with so many more ‘modern’ alternatives to access the internet , this service may soon too become vintage……

When your computer crashes

I sit in my local internet shop,  making this post, having been 5 days without my computer.

I definately should have paid attention to the warning ‘your start up disc is full’ and investigated the  ramifications of this statement. Well now I know…… seems the mac was overfed and full  to bursting, and has now not budged for days.

Meanwhile we make repair enquiries, moan to friends, wail to family, all of whom want to help. If only we can find

the disc which holds the technical information…it goes on….

So now I sit here , in a sociable atmosphere, murmuring voices ,the photocopier whirring, the door open to the sunny  street, signs of life and energy.

Most of all I have discovered how this technology that I  effortlessly resisted  has crept slowly into my day to day affairs and my thinking. It is quite shocking to realise the dependancy that has emerged. Now I am living ‘my life before computers’ ,  motivated, getting things done , by day, by week and who knows maybe by month! Except of course I am here in the computer shop setting this to record on my blog. What about you, are you comfortable

with your levels of computer consumption?
